New Opportunity on the Sunday Assembly Trustee Board- Treasurer

We are seeking a trustee with financial experience to act as Treasurer for The Sunday Assembly charity.

The Sunday Assembly is a secular congregation that celebrates life. Our vision is to help everyone live life as fully as possible and we want you to join us building communities around the world to help people Live Better, Help Often and Wonder More. Since starting in 2013 we have launched 70 communities powered by awesome pop songs, great talks and human kindness.

The Treasurer will take the lead in overseeing the financial affairs of the organisation, ensuring its financial viability, and seeing that proper financial records and procedures are maintained. The Treasurer will assist other trustees to perform their financial duties, by interpreting and explaining accounting requirements, ensuring that the board receives reports containing the information trustees need in an ‘easy to understand’ format, and helping trustees guide any other professional advisers they have appointed.

Job description

In addition to ensuring that the Sunday Assembly complies with its governing document, charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation and regulations, the Treasurer will:

  • prepare and present financial reports to the board on a monthly basis, including projected cash-flow
  • keep the board aware of its financial responsibilities
  • ensure that the organisation’s accounts are prepared in a suitable format
  • ensure that the accounts and financial systems are audited as required by law
  • liaise with the auditors/independent examiners
  • prepare and present budgets, accounts and financial statements in collaboration with staff
  • assure that the financial resources of the organisation meet its present and future needs
  • ensure that the organisation has an appropriate reserves policy
  • prepare and present financial reports to the board, ensuring that appropriate accounting
  • procedures and controls are in place
  • advise on the financial implications of the organisation’s strategic plan
  • make a formal presentation of the accounts at the annual general meeting and draw
  • attention to important points in a coherent and easily understandable way
  • sit on appraisal, recruitment and disciplinary panels as required

 

Person specification

We are looking for people who are, above all, committed to our values and our mission. In addition, the treasurer should ideally possess the following skills, qualities and experience:

 

  • experience as a Finance Director of a growing organisation
  • the ability to think strategically and be prepared to make unpopular recommendations to the board
  • a willingness to take a hands on approach to the preparation of board reports
  • a broad understanding of charity finance issues
  • a willingness to be available to give financial advice and answer enquiries from any staff or volunteers on an ad hoc basis
  • Relevant professional qualifications
